1. Identification: Spondylus layardi (Reeve, 1856), Banare Bay, New Caledonia, attached to debris in pocket of reef in 12m depth, live taken specimen shell.
2. Description: An elusive shell which is probably extinct in the New Caledonia area and nowadays only found in the Arabian Sea which is a somewhat disjunct population thousands of miles away. So this is truly interesting material suitable for scientific study. Typically flat shape and of asymmetrical ovoid shape. With stumpy spines and of excellent and intense color which makes this specimen highly desirable. Belonging to a coherent group of closely related taxa spanning the line from Mediterranean waters, both ends of the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf, and passing Gulf of Oman right to west coast India. These are about the most fascinating subjects for the taxonomic scientist and they are breathtaking jewels for the esthetic collector as well. Not always easy to pin the exact name to any of these due to the lack of documented material, so you will be happy to find here a shell which would be suitable for illustrating the taxon and this particular habitat on a front page of an in depth printed study of the genus.
