DESCRIPTION

First edition.

A satire of sensationalist journalist from foreign correspondents, following a young William Boot, loosely based on Waughs fellow reporter at the Daily Mail, William Deedes.

Boot lives in genteel poverty, contributes to the Daily Beast, a national daily newspaper, and is strongarmed into becoming a foreign correspondent when the editors mistake him for a fashionable novelist John Courteney Boot.

Written by Evelyn Waugh, an English novelist, biographer, travel writer, journalist, and book reviewer known for his early satires Decline and Fall, and A Handful of Dust.

From the library of the son of Joyce Gill, a life-long friend of Evelyn Waugh. Joyce and Evelyn had a passionate affair during the annulment of Evelyn’s first marriage to ‘She-Evelyn’. The pair were introduced sometime around Christmas in 1923 at a nightclub in Fitzrovia, their affair seeming to come to a head in the summer of 1935, when Evelyn invited Joyce to leave her husband and join him on his travels to Abyssinia.
