DESCRIPTION
In the original French.
The scarce 1722 enlarged second edition of this work from the French poet Jean-Baptiste Santeul, or Santeuil, published over two decades after his death.
Two volumes bound in one, with individual title pages and pagination.
With the first volume, titled La Vie et les Bons Mots de Mr Santeuil consisting of biographical insights into the poet, some passages of criticism of his work, and a history of his dispute with the Jesuits, and volumes II, titled Melange de Litteratures a Monsieur des Santeuil containing literature dedicated to Santeuil.
Throughout both volumes are examples of his poetry, which was written in Latin. He authored a number of hymns, many present in these volumes, a number of which were translated into English from the original Latin in the nineteenth century.
With the armorial bookplate of Charles Bruce, Earl of Ailesbury, Viscount Bruce of Amphill, Baron Bruce of Whorleton, to the verso of the title page. Bruce was a British landowner and Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1705 until 1711, when he was raised to the peerage as one of Harleys Dozen and sat in the House of Lords.
A scarce edition of the poetry and hymns of a man viewed as the greatest Latin poet of his age, complemented with a wealth of critical insight into his works.
