Victorian Banded Carnelian Silver Fringe Necklace

A wonderful antique necklace which dates from circa 1880. Made from silver, this lovely piece features a central row of five linked ovals of polished agate, with the top being of white chalcedony, which has been cut back to reveal carnelian beneath. Hanging from the central three agates are single drops of the same stone, turned to a north-east orientation. The carnelians are so well cut, with the top layer of chalcedony being infinitesimally smaller than the lower layer of carnelian, allowing a peep of the orange-red stone to show all around the chalcedony when viewed front on. The top surface is polished to a thin layer, so that when light shines through the sides, the orange can be seen through it, while at other times it is almost opaquely white. When seen from the side, the contrast is very clear, with the carnelian showing bright and clear in contrast to the chalcedony. If you hold the necklace up to the light, it glows a wonderful deep orange-red, with the chalcedony hardly visible at all. It really is a fantastic example of stone cutting and polishing. These are not two separate pieces joined together but one piece of agate cut back to show the differing colours. Each stone is bezel set into silver, with the open settings revealing the carnelian at the back. Set onto a fine silver chain and fastened with a silver bolt ring. A truly splendid and very unusual item.
